Hi, my name is Tom Finn. In my studies, I have earned a Masters of Science in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and I received a BA in Environmental Studies from Maryville College.
Experience and Helping Others
During my graduate studies, I worked in an Agriculture and Veterinary library where I honed my skills as an information professional by assisting library users in research, conducting a weekly outreach effort, and performing analyses on the library’s collections. More recently, I worked as a Customer Success Agent, where I remotely helped customers by resolving technical issues and assisting in database entry.
Collaboration & Sustainability
My professional aspirations are to help build bridges between teams, improve communications with technology tools, and to build more sustainable communities.
My background in libraries and information sciences has equipped me with a toolkit to bring teams together by improving organizational strategies dealing with data, information, and knowledge. Here, my expertise helps to empower organizations with greater access to information and leverages information technology to provide new opportunities to collaborate across teams.
My desire is to support sustainable communities in business, science, and society using best practices in information management to support reproducible science and advocate for FAIR data principles. I desire to use my skills to contribute to the public good and hope to inspire others with the joy of learning and benefits gained from knowledge sharing.
Passions and Personality
My personality helps me achieve my professional goals, where my ability to remain focused and clear headed under pressure has been nurtured by years of experience as a musical performer and in service positions. My optimism and sunny disposition helps to bring people together in a work environment, where I apply analytical and creative thinking to solve problems and find new opportunities.
In my free time, I love to cook for my partner, family, and friends, when I am constantly learning about new foods, trying various preparation techniques and developing delicious recipes. Similarly, as a musician, I continuously search for inspiring music, dedicate myself to frequent practice, and share my enthusiasm with others.
Digital Hobby Projects
Currently, I am endeavoring to use my professional skills to develop web applications for my personal passions. My musical rhythm analysis program aims to bring a greater understanding of rhythmic patterns to percussionists and identify connections between percussion instruments.
Additionally, I am building a recipe database to make cooking more accessible to home cooks, where cooking techniques can be learned and grocery lists can be generated from a custom weekly menu.
